It can be confusing when your car runs well on the highway but overheats in traffic. Many drivers in Victoria, BC, notice this problem during summer congestion. Heavy traffic and high temperatures place extra stress on the cooling system.
If the temperature gauge climbs at traffic lights, one of these issues may be the cause.
1. Cooling Fan Failure
A faulty cooling fan is a common cause of overheating in traffic. At highway speeds, air naturally moves through the radiator. That airflow helps remove heat from the engine coolant. When traffic stops, the cooling fan must provide that airflow.
If the fan motor, relay, or wiring fails, airflow can drop at idle. Engine temperature may then rise quickly in slow traffic.
2. Restricted Radiator Airflow
The radiator removes heat from the coolant before it returns to the engine. Dirt, leaves, insects, and debris can block radiator fins. This limits the airflow needed for proper cooling.
Highway airflow may hide a minor blockage. However, restricted airflow creates problems in stop-and-go traffic. The radiator cannot remove heat from the coolant as easily.
3. A Sticking Thermostat Valve
The thermostat controls coolant flow between the engine and radiator. If it sticks closed, coolant cannot move through the radiator properly. This reduces the cooling system’s ability to remove heat.
4. Coolant Leaks and Low Coolant Levels
Your cooling system needs the right amount of coolant. Leaks can develop in hoses, the radiator, the water pump, or other parts. When coolant levels drop, the engine is more likely to overheat, even if you’re not due for an oil change or other maintenance.
5. A Weak Water Pump
The water pump moves coolant through the engine and cooling system. As it wears out, coolant circulation may decrease. A weak pump may still perform adequately at higher engine speeds.
